Distorsión en los Andes
“Distorsión en los Andes: violencia cultural y exclusión en el cine contemporáneo.” Cine andino: estudios y testimonios. Ed. Julio Noriega and Javier Julián Morales Mena. Galesburg, IL and Lima: Knox College P-UNMSM-Pakarina Ediciones, 2015. 133-146.
Abstract:
This chapter of Andean Cinema analyzes the persistence of discriminatory media discourses about Andean indigenous peoples in Perú. I investigate the acceptance in the international film market of films such as Madeinusa that “glamourize” indigenous peoples of the Andes while negatively distorting Andean values, legitimizing a discourse of indigenous inferiority and Euro-descendant superiority. I demonstrate how the lack of integrity of all the Andean characters depicted in Claudia Llosa’s film reveals a rejection of Peru’s internal “others,” the Quechua-speaking indigenous majorities, defined as non-human in the film.
Book Abstract:
Cine Andino is a joint publication with the objective of analyzing audiovisual activity in the Andean region from multiple perspectives. It is based on a working hypothesis that encourages the research and study of film materials that are the backbone of the Andean vision and promotes the possibilities of developing an audiovisual industry, taking into account the peculiarities of Andean cinema in all its phases: production, distribution and exhibition of films.
